I have so much to do today – I’m so busy – if I multitask, I can get it all done – hmmmmmmm, I need to be at 2 functions tonight at the same time – the school just called and my daughter is sick, ugh…. How can I get all my work done now – oh shoot, I forgot about volunteering for the Boys & Girls Club today at noon – and the list goes on and on and on……..

Last week I was very fortunate to be one of the hundreds in attendance at the Fall Excell conference hosted by Carson Group. One of the amazing keynote speakers was Dr. Christine Carter, Sociologist and Happiness Expert. Dr. Carter is a very talented sought after expert on happiness. Two of her most famous published books are The Sweet Spot: How to Find Your Groove at Home and Work and Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents.

Dr. Carter’s message resonated so much with my life – both past and present. While I’m through the child rearing years and into the empty nest journey with my kids, she impressed upon me ways in which I can help my kids in attaining life balance. I’ve long been a big believer in making life balance a priority. If I don’t have balance, how happy can I be? How effective can I be at the task at hand if I don’t have life balance? In my role as a wealth advisor, maintaining a sense of balance helps me to be the best I can for my clients.

Three myths regarding life balance were the topic of Dr. Carter’s message. Those myths, the truth, and her “Sweet Spot Strategy” regarding each are as follows:

Myth #1: Busyness = Significance.

Truth: Busyness = cognitive overload

Sweet Spot Strategy = Let Yourself Focus

Myth #2: More is Better

Truth: Often, less is more

Sweet Spot Strategy = Find a bright spot

Myth #3: Doing nothing is a waste of time

Truth: Our brains benefit when we waste time

Sweet Spot Strategy = Stare into space

It’s common for us to think we can have it all and do it all. Surround yourself with company that provides the support to have balance in your life. Seek help where you need it.

"In life you make the small decisions with your head and the big decisions with your heart." Omid Kordestani
